These esteemed accolades are designed to honor and bolster outstanding graduate students who exhibit a strong commitment to public engagement and impactful research endeavors.

Valued at up to $10,000 per allocation and provided twice, summing up to $20,000 per recipient, these awards serve as a vital financial boost for innovative and collaborative scholarly pursuits that may otherwise remain unexplored. Tailored to the unique needs of each recipient, this financial support, made available through the Vancouver Public Scholars Awards at UBC for the academic year 2024/2025, encompasses research grants, support for professional development endeavors, and travel expenses related to scholarly activities, as well as stipends for students facing financial constraints with their current funding sources, enabling them to pursue alternative projects.

Each year, approximately 30 promising students from various faculties at UBC, including UBCO, qualify for this funding opportunity, with the potential for renewal funding in the subsequent year for cohort participants.

University of British Columbia scholarship Benefits:

The PSI Fellowship extends financial assistance of up to $10,000, provided in two installments, thereby totaling $20,000 per student. The primary goal of this funding initiative is to facilitate innovative and collaborative academic endeavors that students might otherwise struggle to pursue due to financial constraints. This financial support offers flexibility in its utilization and comprises two primary categories:

  • Research Allowance: This aspect of the fellowship provides financial aid for professional development or travel directly associated with scholarly pursuits. It covers expenses related to research activities, conference attendance, or any other endeavors contributing to the advancement of the proposed project.
  • Student Stipend: In situations where a student’s current funding does not permit involvement in alternative projects, the PSI Fellowship can allocate funds for a student stipend. This ensures that students have the necessary financial backing to focus on their proposed alternative project(s) without facing monetary limitations.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Doctoral students enrolled at UBC Vancouver (comprising PhD, EdD, DMA, and part-time PhD students) within their initial to fifth years of study, as well as doctoral candidates at UBC Okanagan within their initial to fifth years, are eligible to apply for funding assistance.
  • Eligible candidates must have completed their doctoral program within a maximum duration of 48 months by August 31, 2023, and must be officially registered in a UBC doctoral program by September 1, 2023. Consideration for eligibility beyond this timeframe, up to a maximum of 60 months of doctoral study (in exceptional circumstances), may be granted.
  • All recipients of funding are mandated to furnish a report upon the culmination of their first (and if applicable, second) year of funding, along with presenting their research at a Network event entitled “PhDs Go Public.” Furthermore, both students and their respective academic mentors are required to complete a comprehensive questionnaire upon the completion of their funding or engagement.
